NASCAR and MotorSports – From a Queer Perspective

Belgrade-based designer Damjan Stankovi? has developed a concept for a red light which tells you quite intuitively the amount of time remaining until you can blast off the line.

Stankovi?’s Eko is a marvel of user interface design: instant comprehension without manuals. Apart from easing the common anxiety caused by a lack of information about a traffic light’s timing, Eko also has an environmental aspect: if you can see that it’s going to take a while for it to turn green, you can shut your engine off and conserve fuel.

F1 Driver Mika Salo Comes to Nascar

Pending sponsorship support, F1 driver Mika Salo is set to compete inNASCAR‘s Nationwide Series in 2010 after a successful first test, Autosport.com reports.

Salo tested a Sprint Cup-designed Toyota Camry for Michael Waltrip Racing last week, along with fellow former F1 Toyota driver Jarno Trulli.

“Two things were new to me,” the 42-year-old Finn told the Web site. “Driving a big NASCAR and driving on an oval. It felt comfortable in the car from the beginning and I could feel the changes we made to the car.

“It’s all about the money. If my sponsors are happy, it will happen. The plan is to learn the racing and learn the tracks in Nationwide and then move up to the Sprint Cup in 2011.”

New Movie “TITAN” is Nürburgring Porn…..

[ via Autoblog ]

As any parent knows, when a child finds a video he likes he can watch it a kabillion jillion times with undiminished joy. That’s exactly the kid we turn into any time you cut up race footage and set it to classical music and exhaust notes. This time it’s the preview of the movie Titan, by French director Stephane Benini, which strings together action from the 1000 KM of the Nürburgring and features modern and vintage racers and motorcycles.

The movie has its own Facebook page if you really want to declare your love, or you can do the secret admirer thing and just enjoy the 6-minute HD clip from YouTube after the jump. The sound of the GT2 Corvette and DB9R is nothing short of knee-trembling. Follow the jump for the clip, and try not to spill your pureed peas…

Ferrari and Tod’s Driving Mocs

[ via Autoblog ]

Tod’s driving loafers and Ferraris go together like gin and vermouth, if not because every barchetta-driving playboy on the Amalfi Coast is sporting a pair, then because Ferrari’s longtime chairman Luca di Montezemolo also sits on the board of the leathercrafter’s company. But now the two companies have teamed up to bridge the divide with a special line of loafers bearing the iconic Cavallino Rampante.

The shoes bear all the hallmarks of Tod’s enduring design – comfort, flexibility, style and those little rubber nubs in lieu of actual soles, all the better for gripping the pedals. The Ferrari line upgrades with little prancing horses, insoles patterned after Ferrari seats and – in the case of the Gommino Mascherina Griglia – a badge on the tongue reminiscent of the GTO’s grille, replacing the tassels or laces on the Leccetto or Laccetto Tubi GT. They’re available in a variety of colors, but will set you back a little more than the horse-emblazoned Puma sneaks available at your local Foot Locker.

Koenigsegg Pulls Out of SAAB Deal

General Motors’ agreement to sell its Saab Automobile unit to a Swedish car maker has fallen apart, CNBC has learned, raising questions about Saab’s ability to survive.

GM confirmed that Koenigsegg of Sweden pulled out of the deal to buy Saab, whose sales have plunged 61.5 percent this year, with only 7,400 being sold in the US.

“The time factor has always been critical for our strategy to breathe new life into the company,” Koenigsegg said in a press release Tuesday, about five months after the two sides had reached a preliminary deal.

A source told Reuters that GM’s board will meet next Tuesday to consider Saab’s fate.

Joey Logano wins Rookie of the Year Award

[ via Yahoo Sports / Jay Busbee ]

In news that surprised exactly no one, Joey Logano has taken the Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year award, knocking offMax Papis and Scott Speed. Stiff competition there, huh?

Since rookies tend to have about as much success in NASCAR as turkeys on Thanksgiving, the rookie of the year award isn’t quite the big deal it is in some other sports. Even so, the award is a harbinger of future success; in the last ten years, only two winners – Regan Smith last year and Jamie McMurray in 2003 — have not made the Chase at one point. Winners have included Tony StewartKyle BuschJuan Pablo Montoya and Denny Hamlin. (Not winners: Jimmie JohnsonDale Earnhardt Jr.)

Logano had a strong rookie season, notching one win  — a rain-shortened one, but still — along with three top-5s, seven top-10s and about 250,000 jokes about shaving and voice-cracking, half of which were made right here. He finished the year in 20th place, ahead of Casey Mears, McMurray, Earnhardt and many others.

Congratulations, Joey! And to honor your win, we promise not to make any more “little kid” jokes. Go ahead, have a chocolate milk to celebrate! (Whoops.)
